Visual Impairment Awareness

Under the Disability Discrimination Act, all organisations are legally required to make their services accessible to the public. To facilitate this we provide both formal training and informal talks to organisations and community groups. contact

Training
Our visual impairment awareness course covers the whole wide range of eye conditions and their impact on individuals. It also looks at issues around accessibility and good practice. The training is very interactive and we often use spectacles that have been specially designed to simulate some common eye conditions to get people thinking about some of the issues. Our program is flexible and can be tailored as required. It includes

• Myths and realities of visual impairment
• Visual impairment and common eye conditions
• Practical exercises with simulation spectacles
• Visual impairment in relation to the work environment
• Adapting the environment
• Accessibility
• Effective communication
• Sighted guiding of a blind person

Presentations to Groups
We give informal, informative talks to many community groups. During these we cover some more common eye condition, how these impact on people and what support, aids and equipment are available. We tell people something of the work WAB does and its history. We always leave time for a question and answer session and demonstrate a range of the available aids and equipment.
